Perry Colin
Perry Colin is a Chardonnay project founded in 2024 by Oregon winemaker Matt Perry and Burgundy’s Simon Colin. Despite the Burgundian name on the label, it is an Oregon project through and through. They make only Willamette Valley Chardonnay, from fruit grown by like-minded farmers who use organic, biodynamic and regenerative practices. Every decision, from picking dates to blending, is made by the two of them together.
Matt came to wine through an early fascination with fermentation. He worked in wine research and production in Minnesota, followed by harvests in Napa and abroad, before Antica Terra gave him his first job in Oregon. Stints at the Carlton Winemakers Studio and Adelsheim followed, and he went on to become winemaker at 00 Wines, the Willamette Valley house known for its Burgundian-minded Chardonnay.
Simon comes from one of Chassagne-Montrachet’s best-known wine families. He is the son of Philippe Colin and the grandson of Michel Colin-Deléger. He worked alongside his father from 2014, started a small négoce of his own in 2017, and in 2021 took over most of the family vineyards under his own name as Domaine Simon Colin. Oregon was part of his training, and that is where the two first worked together, early in both of their careers.
The 2024 vintage is Perry Colin’s first. The Oregon Blanc blends fruit from all three of the project’s vineyards into one bright, mineral calling card. Above it sit three single-vineyard wines. Johan Vineyard is a Demeter-certified biodynamic site in the Van Duzer Corridor, where cool afternoon winds from the Pacific shape the fruit. Grand Oak, owned by the Austin family since 2014, is planted on volcanic Jory and windblown Laurelwood soils. Tsai Vineyard, near Gaston in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, is farmed organically and dry-farmed on its own roots, planted to the Dijon 76 and 96 clones of Chardonnay.
We think Perry Colin shows how much Willamette Valley Chardonnay can achieve when careful growers and two winemakers trained on both sides of the Atlantic work together. Set the single vineyards side by side, then return to the Oregon Blanc to taste how they come together. Quantities from this first vintage are very small.
